Statue of Liberty National Monument Life and Safety Upgrades and Post-Sandy Recovery, New York City: Award of Merit for Government/Public Buildings

This $42-million, two-pronged project initially involved upgrading life, fire and safety systems at the Statue of Liberty National Monument—a job that was finished the day before Superstorm Sandy struck. Before the storm, the team’s work included demolishing the interior levels of the 145-ft-high granite pedestal, including dismantling the seven-story interior stairwell and replacing it with two wider stairwells. But the storm left Liberty Island with severely damaged buildings, promenade, docks, grounds and other infrastructure. As a result, the team’s next job focused on replacing and relocating mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Electrical switches and equipment were moved from the basement level to a new steel floor, erected 14 ft above ground to comply with new federal regulations and to prevent future damage and loss of power during storms.

Judges commended the team’s handling of logistical constraints in getting to and from the island as well as once on site.

Rutgers University will soon break ground on a nearly 80,000 square-foot building in New Brunswick where its Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health will do basic nutrition research, study policy issues and create partnerships with food companies.

This week, Rutgers awarded a $34 million construction contract to Joseph A. Natoli Construction Co., in the Pine Brook section of Montville, to build a facility that is expected to open in 2015. The total construction project is expected to cost $55 million.

The Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health has existed in temporary quarters on the Cook Campus since 2010. Construction will begin this year and be completed in 2015, according to Peter Gillies, the institute’s founding director.

Statue of Liberty to Reopen After a Year of Renovations

October 15, 2012 | CNN

New York (CNN) — The Statue of Liberty is set to reopen Sunday after a year of renovations intended to make the iconic 19th-century gift from France easier to navigate and more accessible to visitors with disabilities.

The interior of the copper colossus has been closed to visitors since October 2011. On Sunday, the monument’s 126th birthday, visitors using wheelchairs will for the first time be able to visit one of the observation decks, located near the feet of Lady Liberty.

“You see this stuff on TV … but to actually be here, it takes on a whole brand new dimension,” said Larry Hughes, a Vietnam War veteran and the first wheelchair user to ride the newly installed elevator to the deck.

As he looked out onto the Manhattan skyline, Hughes told Zoraida Sambolin on CNN’s “Early Start” that he felt blessed to be inside the statue instead of looking at it from afar. CNN joined Hughes and other veterans for an exclusive first look at the renovations Wednesday.
